Schwinn Surge Mountain Bike Review

Is The Schwinn Surge Mountain Bike A Good Starting Point For Upgrades?

Schwinn Surge Mountain BikeThe Schwinn Surge Mountain Bike has the immediate look of a bike that means business. You can go over the basic specification and photos and see a lot of helpful features.

But, there is also nothing that has a wow factor. So, is this a good entry-level bike to upgrade over time or are there hidden issues?

The Pros and Cons of this Schwinn Surge Mountain Bike.

Pros:

  •  The look and feel of the aluminium frame
  •  The option to upgrade the bike because of the mounts
  •  The rest of the specification is pretty good for new riders

Cons:

  •  Some issues with the gears
  •  A long assembly process

The Schwinn Surge Mountain Bike is a great looking bike that should help riders get into the sport with ease.

There is actually a lot to talk about with the frame of this bike. First, there is the weight. The aluminium means that this is lighter than some other bikes at this price range, which is perfect for picking up a little speed and for portability.

Then there is the design. The combination of graphite and orange with the black fork and other features looks great. You also get comfortable geometry for better performance.

Finally, Schwinn has added mounts for brackets, mudguards and a bottle cage. So, it shouldn’t too difficult to give the MTB further upgrades in the future.

Schwinn Surge 26” Wheel Mountain Bike

As for the performance, the bike has plenty of quality features on board to allow for a great ride. You get the support of the front fork for better cushioning on jumps and bumps.

This pair well with the responsive pair of disc brakes for greater control over your actions.

There is a 7-speed gear system, which should be more than enough at this level. Also, you get the quality tires on the 26’’ wheel for improved handling as you explore.

Some riders have struggled with the gears and assembly of this Schwinn 7-speed MTB.

The first potential issue here is that the gears aren’t always as reliable as they could be. There are repeated comments about gears slipping and difficulty changing them. Be aware that there aren’t trigger shifters here, unlike other mountain bikes.

One rider says they skip the highest and lowest gear to be safe. Another issue is that the bike requires a lot of assembly, which can be a long and tricky process. It is advisable to get a tune-up at a bike store afterward.

Is this Schwinn Surge still recommendable with these problems in mind?

This bike would be a lot easier to recommend if everything was perfectly functional right out the box. The gears and the assembly process are challenging. However, those that want to use this as a starting point can have fun here.

You could add a new gear system, upgrade other elements you see fit, and fix those racks and guards as part of that initial assembly process. So, the Schwinn bike does have potential for the right person.
