Is A Thule RideOn 9403 Towbar Mounted Bike Rack A Helpful Aid?
There are high hopes that it will suit families a little better than some standard models. Is this the case?
The Pros and Cons of this Thule 3-Bike Towbar Mounted Bike Rack.
- The bar has a tilt function that should allow for greater ease of use
- There is a lighting system at the back
- You can load up to three bikes at a time
- The weight capacity does limit how many bikes you can tow at once
- There is no lock for the bikes once added
The Thule RideOn 9403 Towbar Mounted Bike Rack does try to do more than your average bike rack to help riders out.
The most interesting feature of this Thule bike rack is the tilt function. This means that you can adjust the angle of the rack and access the boot of the car without having to take the bikes off.
At the same time, the system is easy to use and mount to the car thanks to the tow bar coupling.
The assembly process takes about 30 minutes in order to get everything set up with ease on that tow bar. It isn’t too long and you do get a secure fit.
Another important feature here is that you get the lighting board for the back of the rack built-in. This has a 7-pin lighting plug as part of the package.
Also, you can load three bikes in total, which is great for parents with a child who all want to be able to ride their own bikes. There is, however, a drawback to this feature.
There are still some important limitations to this Thule Mounted Bike Rack system.
The problem with this 3-bike system is that there is a maximum load capacity of 45kg. Now, this does mean 15kg per bike and there are a lot of bikes with steel frames that are heavier than this.
So, pay attention to the weight of all of your mountain bikes combined if you do want to load three at once.
There are comments from users that have had to remove saddles and pedals to get three on here at once. This seems like a lot of hard work.
Also, be aware that while you can lock the bike rack to the tow bar, you can’t lock the bikes to the rack.
Is the Thule RideOn 9403 the right choice for your family’s needs?
In short, there are some issues here if you are a family looking for the strongest and most reliable bar possible.
The weight allowance could prove to be a big restriction depending on the bikes that you own. However, three lightweight bikes or two standard bikes should be fine.
The tilting design and the relatively simple installation process go a long way towards helping users prep the car for a day out. Therefore, the Thule mounted bike rack is still a highly recommendable choice for a lot of people.
